This painting is a study for a much larger painting with a focus on the yearly rituals of the rut - the mating season. It is the beginning of October, the middle of the rut where the racks of Bull Moose antlers are still recovering from the shedding summer velvet covers. These males are proving their dominance over each other in their desire to find a female cow to mate with. The forest is echoing with sounds of this confrontation: antlers smashing against each other, the sprays of water and mud filling the air. It is one of the most exciting and impressive natural events to take place in our forests.

The Bull Moose pictured here is the catalyst for the ensuing battle having just come into contact with the other bull. His head twists sharply to the left after being surprised to see the other bull. It is a moment in time that is captured here, two bulls looking straight at each other in anticipation to do battle.
