NEWS: Presenting a new painting for 2021 - “Early Morning Breakout - Common Loon Family

Acrylics on Masonite Board, 32” x 56”

The white quartz outcrops throughout the many lakes of Killarney Provincial Park give the land its defining features which are an inspiration to artists today as much as they were to the Group of Seven artists, like A. Y. Jackson. It was these same rocks that attracted me to the landscape over twenty years ago where both sketches and photos were completed and later became the foundational resource material for creating this large painting.

The setting chosen here is an early morning sunrise with its soft light cascading across the surface of a white rock wall and outcrop that projects outward into the lake. A perfect backdrop for this Common Loon family breaking out from their protective hiding place among fallen wooded tree roots within a marsh area. There is also the glass-like reflection of the white quartz on the still waters that heightens the essence of this sunrise. A thin layer of fresh fog adds to the mysterious atmosphere of the moment as it ever so slowly lifts off the waters.

While simultaneously working on a number of pieces, this painting had a start date in late 2016 and in now complete for a September 2021 introduction. Those interested in the production process leading up to this artwork can check out the four pencil studies found in the Drawing and Sketching Gallery of this website.
