A search of open skies will often reveal a soaring Red Tailed Hawk, circling around effortlessly, riding the rising thermals of warm air generated from the suns heat on the earth’s surface. So will a search down country roads and highways reveal this perching Hawk on tree limbs projecting a light beige chest in surrounding wood lots as it contrasted against surrounding trees.

Most often though, the many utility poles dotting and protruding upward throughout country lanes become convenient perches for an active Red Tailed Hawk looking over a terrain for prey. In the summer during the early morning hours and again in the late afternoon as is depicted in this painting, is the most active feeding time for a Red Tailed Hawk.

The main features that distinguish the Red Tailed Hawk from other raptors is its deep rusty red tail, its size and weight, the male being about one third smaller than the female conveys its gender. In this painting, a male is sitting perched on a vintage utility pole with a late afternoon sun cascading light over distant clouds.

(Scientific Name: Buteo Jamaicensis)
