The foundations of the earth have been a perplexing wonder for humanity to understand. The Grand Canyon in the great state of Arizona stands as one of the great geological jewels of North America, if not the world in coming closer to understanding it. Carved out through the processes of both cataclysmic flooding and slow erosions by winds, rains and snow, this feature stands out like the reading of a great novel with its many layers and towers now exposed to the air.

Life is harsh and sometimes unforgiving in this ecological system which includes the great bull elk. It stands out as one of many surviving species which makes a life from feeding on the many variety of shrubs and plants found around the canyon.

This is a study for a very large composition which will include a Cow along side the Bull Elk in context of a greater vista of the canyon. Its purpose is to explore placement of compositional elements, light and shadow, and colour as a result of a day which included rain clouds, fog and even a rainbow. The fourteen points on this Bull Elk speaks to its greatness as species as does its jester pointing toward the Grand Canyon.
