The Ferruginous Hawk is found primarily in the grasslands, shrublands and deserts of the western United States and Canada. Its breeding range is in the southern parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, where a variety of nesting structures, like cliffs, trees and utility poles are used. Historically, a few pair have nested in southern British Columbia as well. There have also been sightings of this raptor on the borders of southern Ontario during migration periods.

The Ferruginous Hawk is large and has long broad wings which are rounded at the tips with a fan-shaped tail. Two colour phases occur with this raptor. The less common dark-phased one and this more common pale phase seen here. Its brown upper parts are orange-cinnamon with white markings covering the shoulders and back, the dominant white underparts containing some brown streaks filling the chest.

This painting has the Ferruginous Hawk depicted in a perched position on top of a branch with its prey during in early spring. It is just passing through this diverse flora Carolinian forest, a unique place, dominated by numerous species of trees which fill the background of the painting. Though its diet consists primarily of ground squirrels, rabbits also make up its food source. Found in southern Ontario, this unique forest sits on the southernmost edge of the province and boasts of 70 species of trees.

(Scientific Name: Buteo regalis)
