The Osprey is a bird of prey sometimes referred to as a fish hawk. You will see this raptor flying over many northern lakes, rivers and marshes throughout the day in search of fish. On this occasion, a beautiful Georgian Bay sunset coats the Osprey with its colours as it climbs upward in the sky.

Unlike many birds, both the male and female osprey are similar in appearance, but differ in size. The female depicted here is the larger of the two. The head is white with a broad brown stripe running across the eyes like a mask. The upper body, wings and tail feathers of the Osprey are brown, but from below they are predominantly white with lighter brown patches. Its legs have no feathers, but carry a similar skin texture as its talons.

When feeding, a drama of the hunt begins. The Osprey climbs the skies above circling around, then descending lower, with wings flapping repeatedly as it hovers over water. When their eyes are fixed securely on the prey, it changes in position. The wings are pulled back and the talons thrust forward, as it dives down toward the fish in the depths of the water.

(Scientific Name: Pandion haliaetus)
