Since ancient times, around the world and in North America, the Golden Eagle has been viewed as royalty among birds. As its name implies, this monarch among raptors wears a crown, a set of bright golden brown feathers on its head. They protrude outward like spikes in contrast to the muted brown feathers that surround the rest of the Golden Eagle.

I have painted a portrait of this female Golden Eagle in an authoritative posture. Like a monarch, sitting upright, its outstretched neckline commanding respect, and with its open mouth crying out commands to the surrounding wildlife.

In Ontario, they are known primarily to inhabit the Hudson Bay area, although they have been known to venture further south in times past. Like all raptures, the female is larger then the male in both size and weight. At a distance, this eagle has sometime been mistaken for an immature Bald Eagle, but if one looks up at the bottom of its wings, the white feather pattern will confirm that it is a Golden Eagle.

The far north can be out of reach for many wanting to see a Golden Eagle in its natural habitat, but the next best chance is during their yearly migration. They venture southward over lakes, along the rivers and streams toward the cliffs and Appalachian Mountains in the East and Rocky Mountains in the West of North America.

(Scientific Name: Aquila chrysaetos canadensis)
