There are numerous fresh water lakes in Ontario that convey a wild and mysterious personality. The surrounding forests and its trees are constantly springing up and dying out. If you have ever camped in a national or provincial forest, you will remember the time when a quiet night was broken up by the sounds of a thunderous crashing tree.

This painting conveys this mystery with numerous fallen White Pines hidden within a fog. The Tree in the middle ground exposes the decay it has undergone. Without bark and gnarled throughout in is texture, its colours exhibit rustic golden browns, showing evidence of decaying life, and the light greys, a sign of the weather’s bleaching effect on its surfaces. The trees surviving branches uphold this White Pine like a great corroding statue standing over water.

Then we have this Common Loon pair coming into the picture plain as if to pay homage to these fallen trees. They seek out hidden and protective places of refuge among them. Loons are paired for life, and this pair may have found the perfect location to hide out in order to hamper or prevent predators from attacking them.
