Winter has a wonderful tendency of reshaping and redefining the landscapes of summer. Like a blanket, the many surfaces found in that landscape are covered up with layer upon layer of snow. The forest trees which were covered in leaves are now left bare, transforming them, providing penetrating perspectives of positive and negative spaces between its trunks and branches.

On the surface, these wood lots seem lifeless, there is no energy, all is quiet and seems dead. Its creatures have disappeared, retreating deep within its background. Searching deeper into this picture there is life, hidden, ready to spring forth with new energy.

This painting invites the viewer into the composition by way of a snowy highway from the bottom left, across the middle, up toward the top and back again. Like an open path that leads a traveler through a forest, the eyes are drawn deeper and deeper on this road of discovery. On the left stands a large decaying stump, projecting upward, but lifeless . On the right lies the snow covered grasses, once vibrant in the summer winds, but now quiet. Then as the eyes come down and cross over from those dead grasses toward the middle again, a surprise is encountered. A Cottontail Rabbit sits hidden within those grasses, storing up energy, ready to emerge on a moment”s notice in order to reignite life within that forest.
